Crackheads, Glue Sniffers & Prostitutes

Alan Graham, the CEO and Founder of Mobile Loaves & Fishes refers to the disenfrachised people that the ministry has been reaching on the streets of Austin as “crackheads, glue sniffers and prostitutes.” That descriptive is startling. Shock value perhaps to the ears of folks who have made it their (unintentional) aim to do life in a safe, comfortable manner shielded from the “bad stuff.” Yet something beautifully redemptive unfolds when there is a spirit that boldly declares, “Everyone is welcome” … the high achiever, the drop out, the burned out … the clean and “together,” the addicted, divorced and abandoned … the unforgiven and the unforgiving …those living in sin and those who see themselves as a “spiritual zero.” The words of Jesus (to the religious “know it alls”) speak loudly to the heart of His mission:

“Healthy people don’t need a doctor -- sick people do. I have come to call not those who think they are righteous, but those who know they are sinners and need to repent.” Luke 5:31-32

Mike (far left), explains to a tour group at Community First! his role in creating sustainable agriculture

Mike (pictured above) will soon be moving into Community First! (CF!) when the project in far East Austin is completed sometime later this summer/fall. He will be one of about 200+ formerly homeless, disabled that will be settled in a safe, affordable, supportive environment. Mike’s life is changing … he is making progress and is putting the pieces back together to deal with the pain of financial reversal, the loss of family and the confusion brought on by a legal mix up.

We are looking forward to creating a life-giving model of spiritual growth that launches a wave of dynamic Christ followers from CF! and beyond. It will be a beautiful thing to gather in a place that avoids denominational, cultural, economic and racial distinction … a place where everyone is welcome!
